With the beginning of a new month, car manufacturers have started posting their sales figures for the previous month, which happens to be the most celebrated month of the year due to the festive season. As sales figures become publicly available, the gap between car buyers buying petrol and diesel cars is becoming clearer, and in some cases even wider.

While in recent times, people are turning more towards petrol-powered cars, some segments are still garnering high sales of diesel-powered vehicles as per T-BHP sales analysis. People are buying petrol-powered variants of hatchbacks and sedans more, while the category of SUVs and MUVs is still very favorable towards diesel-powered variants.

Starting with ladder-on-frame rugged SUVs and MUVs, 100 percent of the sales of models like Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Altrus G4, and MG Gloster come from diesel variants, as they are diesel-only models. However, for other ladder-on-frame vehicles like Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Innova, and Mahindra Scorpio-N, which are available with both petrol and diesel engine options, more than 95 percent of their sales are coming from diesel variants.

Talking about monocoque frame-based mid-size SUVs, sales of diesel-only models like Tata Harrier, Tata Safari, Jeep Meridein, and Citreon C5 Aircross remained 100 percent dependent on diesel. However, even for other SUVs, demand for diesel-powered variants remained high, some of which are Hyundai Tucson (72%), Hyundai Alcazar (73%), Mahindra XUV700 (66%) and Jeep Compass (57%). MG Hector (36%) was an exception however, it is not available with the option of a diesel automatic, unlike others in this segment. Monocoque SUVs like Kia Carnival and Mahindra Marazzo, which are diesel-only models, showed that 100 percent of their sales came from diesel variants.

For small mid-size and compact SUVs, which are available in both petrol and diesel versions, demand for their diesel variants remained low, such as Kia Seltos (43%), Kia Sonet (45%), and Hyundai Venue (22%). Tata Nexon (16%) and Honda WR-V (11%). However, Hyundai Creta (55%) and Mahindra XUV300 (51%) remained the exceptions here, with their diesel variants experiencing higher demand.

Among sedans, while Honda City and Honda Amaze generated 6 percent of their sales from diesel variants, 41 percent of Hyundai Verna sales came from diesel variants. Even for the Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz, the only two hatchbacks available with the option of a diesel-powered variant, diesel variant sales stood at 11 percent.
